Your voice is an expression of who you are.

What you express comes through your voice day by day, year by year, for your entire life. Your voice expresses who you are, so in a way, your voice is who you are. The kinds of thoughts and feelings you like to express, they all come through in your voice.

If you are the kind of person who likes to say to people, “Don’t worry about it, it’ll be okay” your voice will sound a certain kind of way. Unless, you’re the kind of person who likes to say those words, but really feels that, “Everything is going to hell in a hand basket” then your voice will sound a very different kind of way.

I can’t sing.

As someone who thinks about and talks about the voice, people often try to convince me that they cannot sing. They confess they have the worst voice ever heard, and when I offer some resistance, they fight to convince me that, while there may be some people who could sing well after all, they are “the one true hopeless case, I’m afraid. I am truly tone deaf and it would make your ears bleed to hear me sing.”

Well here’s the thing: somewhere along the way someone (perhaps even themselves) told them that they couldn’t sing. That person was wrong.

If you can love yourself, you can love your voice…

…and so can others.

The truth is, if you can like or love yourself, then you can like the sounds you make. Because they are a reflection of who you are. Not everyone has a strong voice, a pretty voice, an edgy voice, a flexible voice. However, everyone can have a voice that sounds like who they are. With practice and attention to who they are, and to their voice, both of those things can grow and change. In fact:

“The only constant in life is change.” -Heraclitus

The Moral

If  you don’t like the way your voice sounds, first remember or get to know who you really are. If you like who you are and you’re STILL not happy with your voice, maybe it is just a matter of dedication and practice, or seeking out guidance.

‘Cause in the end, your voice is wonderful, because the quality of your voice reflects the wonderful person that you are.
